About Stephen M. Black

Stephen M. Black is currently a Regents’ Professor and medical researcher at Georgia Regents University. He joined the University in 2006 as a Professor and was then promoted to Regents’ Professor, the highest honor bestowed upon Georgia professors, in 2010. Stephen M. Black not only lectures future leaders in the medical industry but is also actively involved with groundbreaking research that he hopes will uncover new treatment options for acute lung injury (ALI). His active research grants are:

  • Reactive oxygen species in PPHN: Role of ADMA
  • Perinatal regulation of TGF beta 1 during vascular remodeling
  • Perinatal pulmonary hypertension: developmental mediators
  • Endothelial barrier protection and repair in acute lung injury

When he is not working on research, Stephen M. Black is often traveling to professional medical conferences in order to share his research findings with the medical community. He has presented at conferences in Germany, Greece, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. Stephen M. Black has also been invited to 29 different educational institutions to share his medical knowledge as a Visiting Professor or in an Invited Presentation. Black and his research by consulting one of the more than 160 articles he has written for peer-reviewed journals.

Stephen M. Black began his medical training by enrolling at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (learn more) in 1982. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology in 1986 and then stayed at the University of Edinburgh to complete his Ph.D. studies. The University of Edinburgh conferred his Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology in 1990, and he remained at the University for one more year to pursue postdoctoral training. Following completion of this training, he moved to the United States to gain two additional years of Molecular Endocrinology training at the University of California, San Francisco.
